What Good is Life without a Dog?

My Two boys, Gunther and Buck

What good is life without a dog?

Have you ever asked yourself where you would be without a dog?

Without a dog, any time you accidentally dropped a piece of food on the floor, you’d have to bend over to pick it up.

Without a dog, you’d never have anyone demonstrate how important it is to stop every day and smell the roses… and then lift your leg on them.

Without a dog, no one will listen to you

r opinions for more than a few minutes without interrupting to tell you their opinions, which you won’t find nearly as interesting. A dog, on the other hand, thinks everything you have to say is absolutely brilliant and fascinating, especially if you’re holding a piece of food while you’re talking.

Without a dog, there’s no one in the house who thinks driving with you to the store is one of the most fun things in the world.

Without a dog, you’ll be without at least one creature who thinks you are the smartest, most decent and heroic human being on the planet.

Without a dog, you might never know the joy of owning custom-chewed shoes.

Without a dog, some of your tennis balls might get really dry.

Without a dog, no one will think you are the most amazing cook in the world just because you can open a can.

Without a dog, you’ll probably not take walks every day, and you’ll probably never carry little bags for dog poo, either. Studies show that just adding those dog walks to your schedule can help you lose weight, live longer and battle stress (though no one has ever claimed that picking up dog poo does any of these things). Having a dog in your life lowers blood pressure and wards off depression. In short, without a dog you won’t live as long or as happily.

So why would you want to be without a dog? Just something to think about... tell me what your dog does for you!

Pet Halloween Costumes Double In 2012

With Halloween right around the corner, Americans are expected to spend 40 percent more on Halloween pet costumes this year than in 2010.
According to the National Retail Federation, Americans intend to spend $370 million on their pets this Halloween season—that’s $70 million more than last year. It seems pet spoiling is actually on the rise. In 2002, consumers spent almost $30 billion on their pets. Whereas last year, for the first time ever, national pet spending surpassed $50 billion. This record is expected to be broken once again this year. This year, approximately 15 percent of Americans will buy pet costumes—a 24 percent increase since 2010. Not only are more people purchasing Halloween costumes for their pets, but they’re also spending much more money on these costumes. While last year’s top-selling pet Halloween costumes included pumpkins, devils, and hot dogs, this year, expect to see superheroes, lederhosen, elephants, tacos, and chefs.
But always remember: your pet’s safety and comfort should be the main concern with any costume.
“Fun costumes should be simple and not limit the pet’s ability to move or use their natural senses,” said Kirsten Theisen, director of pet care issues for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
Don’t forget to submit your pet’s photo to enroll in our second annual Halloween costume contest! We will be accepting submissions until next Wednesday, October 28th.
Once all photos are in, we will post all the submitted photos to Facebook, and the pet costume with the most “likes” will win the contest. Make sure you get all of your friends to become a fan of Global Animal’s Facebook page so they can vote for the picture of your costumed pet!

Is anyone Missing a Mastiff? We need to catch this poor boy.

Somebody must be missing this Mastiff???? This Mastiff was spotted by multiple people 3 weeks ago roaming around the Country Club/Golf Course in Mingoville. Now today 10/20/12 it was spotted again at the very top of Madisonburg Mountain by one of the same people. The dog appears to be a purebred Mastiff who is very very skinny. It would not get close enough to snap a good picture and we are unsure if it is wearing a color. It looked like a very lost, scared, starved dog. I will drive over the mountain tomorrow to see if I can spot him because I am unsure how much longer he will make it traveling since it is getting colder and it is already so thin. Please contact me if you have seen this dog or know somebody that is missing a Mastiff. Also, the family that lives on the golf course in Mingoville has been contacted multiple times about this dog because they own two Mastiffs but this is not their dog. Thank You so Much for taking the time to read this and look at the not so great pic!!!!

A day in the life of a puppy foster...

I woke up this morning to a loud crash followed by a series of little yips, a yowl and lots of barking. Groggily, I went downstairs to find my darling foster puppies out of the "puppy area" (the crash was the gate falling down). The two pups, the last of my litter of five, had cornered my cat in the bookcase. As I attempted to bribe them to return to the puppy area... they're at the stage where they'll do anything for a piece of cheese... I stepped in a pile of poop. I cleaned up their area, got them situated, checked on the cat, assured my dogs all was well and looked at the clock - 4:37 a.m. "Why do I do this," I thought to myself.

Since Cortlyn asked me to write a guest blog, I thought it was the perfect topic. I've been a foster mom for 14 years. I got my first foster almost immediately after getting my first dog. He was deaf and would run away. My vet suggested I foster and find a dog to "guide" him. I've been fostering ever since. Over the years, I've fostered more than 500 animals, mostly dogs and cats. I've lost shoes, books, clothing and furniture to my foster dogs. One ripped out my wall to wall carpeting. One dug a hole through the door to my spare bedroom. So why do I keep doing it? Because someone has to... because I should... because they need me... all of those reasons are valid, but the real reason I foster is the joy I get when I see my foster go to his forever home. Is it sad? Absolutely. I know I will cry when Peanut and Hazel find their families, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

The dog that got me started in fostering passed away this June. I miss him with all my heart. His spirit lives on, though, in ever foster that comes through my door. I can't save them all, but each one I have saved has touched my heart completely. If you've never fostered, I urge you to consider it. It will change you forever.

New Baby

Almost 5 weeks ago my daughter Alexandra was born. I was curious to see how our 2 yellow labs (mother: Sadie, daughter: Faith) and 3 cats (Puck, Moses, & Sierra) would react to her arrival. I had my husband bring a blanket home from the hospital with Alex's scent on it so that they could ease into her arrival. When I brought her home I left her in her carseat and let everyone sniff her. Everyone was calm and accepting until the first cry! The dogs thought they did something wrong and were scared. The cats were more curious than ever. Since that day Sadie takes a motherly role and watches over Alex (see picture). Faith could care less about her, and the 3 cats want to conquer her nursery. The first night I had Alex in her crib she woke up crying. I went in to see what was wrong and Moses was in the crib with her. Since that event I have kept the door to her nursery shut at all times.
Blogging is not my "thing" so I hope someone enjoys this post.

Thanks,
Courtney

Kittens in Need

A few months ago I noticed a few kittens on our property. I know they were not our kittens since our cats are spayed and neutered. I called the girl running this site, Cortlyn Johnson since we knew each other from school. She brought her friends and got all the kittens, and found loving homes for them. She is a great person, and would do anything for animals.

Pennsylvania Ferret Rescue

I came across this site, when someone suggested I pass them along to a friend looking to rehome her ferret. After looking at this site, i remembered, this is the group my father and I rescued out ferrets from years ago. They were great people then, with lots of knowledge and were very strong in helping us in all accidents.

If anyone is interested in a Ferret, or has a ferret who needs help please check out this group.

The depths to which human depravity can sink, as illustrated by this story and gutwrenching pictures can shock even those of us who have seen the worst.
Description
The misery, pain and callousness inflicted by humans is more than can be understood by most people. However, the heartless manner in which a dying animal is tossed away like garbage is not only reprehensible but the increase that we have seen indicates a downward spiral of compassion, moral fiber and ethics.

The 22 story apartment building is equipped with garbage chutes on each floor for tenants. Someone had no more use for this dog. They had starved it to near death, put it in a garbage bag and threw it down the garbage chute. A maintenance worker cleans out the bin every few days and on Wednesday, March 16th, they were cleaning out the contents of the container to go directly into a trash compacter. The bag moved a little and the worker opened it to find a moribund dog inside -- pathetically thin, cold and near death.

The City of Newark Animal Control was contacted and ACO Arthur Skinner picked up the dog and brought him directly to the Society. The veterinary staff immediately put him on intravenous fluid. His temperature was so low that it did not even register on the thermomenter. He was covered with heating pads and blankets.

After a brief time at the Society's Newark facility, he was ambulanced to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls -- a referral hospital with 24 hour emergency care. If he died during that night, we feel he would know that everyone loved and cared about him and treated him gently and lovingly. He amazed everyone at the Society and at Garden State by surviving with the 24 hour emergency care that they rendered. He was given a blood transfusion, a bath -- and even a walk! In honor of the first day of his re-birth, we call him Patrick -- in honor of St. Patrick's Day and we hope he has the luck of the Irish

Check out Chick!

Look at this beautiful Red Greyhound up for adoption with Nittany Greyhounds. From what I read about him:

He does not seem to like loud noises or a lot of chaos. He'd be good in a quiet home... he will just stand by you quietly and if you put your hand on him, he's a happy camper. Very calm... really nice boy.
He's very sweet, hangs back a little, and then comes without hesitation. He was fostered in Florida so he's already got it all and what a nice boy! He's small animal safe, and probably would not be good in a family with kids.

For more Information on adopting Chick, or another Greyhound, please check out Nittany Greyhounds!
Mama Emerald is a big cuddler and thinks she a lap dog. She's OK with
cats but she does enjoy chasing them off the bed at night. She's would fit better in an only dog home, but she can make friends with other dogs eventually. Emerald just likes to show them
she's the boss first. She's super sweet and just wants to be loved.

Emerald and her puppies were rescued a couple months ago, from a neglect/hoarding situation. They were court rewarded into a local rescue. If you would like more information on seeing Emerald or any of her remanding pups, please send me a message for more information.

Bowie Needs a Home.. Rescued from the needle.

Bowie is a BIG kitty, who’s slightly misunderstood. He was minutes away from the needle when a the Aiken Family saved him. He’s a beautiful boy, but he’s not getting along with our other cats, so we’d like to find him a home with someone who’s experienc
ed with cats, and maybe has a room just for Bowie. He has a tendency to give love bites, and he’s sometimes a bit cranky, but he says it’s all part of his charm. He doesn’t bite hard, but he likes to let you know that you’re his. He’s litter trained and doesn’t cause trouble; all in all, he’s a good boy. He was very scared when he first got here, but he’s adjusted really well—except for the other cats. If you’re interested in this big, handsome lug, message the Aiken Family at m_hintosh@hotmail.com, and we’ll set up a chance for you to meet him.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3724022058165.2134482.1204288343&type=1

6 Common Myths about Pet Adoption

Myth #1: I don't know what I'm getting
There may in fact be more information available about an adoptable pet than one from a breeder or pet store.

Many of the pets posted on Petfinder are in foster care. Foster parents live with their charges 24-7 and can often tell you, in detail, about the pet's personality and habits. If the pet is at a shelter, the staff or volunteers may be able to tell you what he or she is like.

At the very least, you can ask the staff if the pet was an owner surrender (rather than a stray) and, if so, what the former owner said about him or her. Quite often pets are given up because the owner faced financial or housing issues (more on that later). You can also ask about the health and behavioral evaluations the pet has undergone since arriving at the shelter. In contrast, pet store owners rarely have an idea of what a pet will be like in a home.

Myth #2: I can't find what I want at a shelter
While it's true that adopting a purebred or a young puppy can require more patience than going to a pet store or breeder, it can also lead to a better match for you and your family, for the reasons described above.

There are also breed-specific rescues for just about every breed, and most of them post their pets on Petfinder. (Petfinder can even e-mail you when a pet that fits your criteria is posted -- just click "Save this Search" at the top of your search results page.)

Myth #3: I can get a free pet, so why pay an adoption fee?

While getting a "free" pet may seem like a bargain at first, you're then responsible for veterinary costs that shelters and rescue groups usually cover, including:
  • Spaying/neutering $150-300
  • Distemper vaccination $20-30 x2
  • Rabies vaccination $15-25
  • Heartworm test $15-35
  • Flea/tick treatment $50-200
  • Microchip $50
Myth #4: I'll be "rescuing" a sick puppy from a pet store
Pet stores play on our sympathies by keeping pets in small enclosures and in storefronts. But paying the pet store to let you "save" the puppy or kitten gives those stores exactly what they want -- income -- and perpetuates a cruel industry

Myth #5: Pets are in shelters because they didn't make good pets

In fact, the main reasons pets are given up include:
  • Owners are moving to housing that don't allow pets (7% dogs, 8% cats)
  • Allergies (8% cats)
  • Owner having personal problems (4% dogs and cats)
  • Too many or no room for litter mates (7% dogs, 17% cats)
  • Owner can no longer afford the pet (5% dogs, 6% cats)
  • Owner no longer has time for the pet (4% dogs)

Myth #6: Shelter pets have too much baggage

Rescued pets have full histories ... something that can actually be GREAT for adopters. Remember, all pets-- even eight-week old puppies and kittens -- have distinct personalities. Those personalities will either jive with your home and lifestyle or not.  Work with rescue group or shelter staff to find the right fit for you.

Adopt Buddy!

EVERYONE LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL boxer mix from adoptable through Pets Come First. He is a big lover, but does have a lot of energy. Needs an own who will enforce rules, exerise him, and crate him when he is alone (he tries to escape/chew otherwise). He wants to please though and is a cuddler. Check out his facebook page! Or you can check him out on Petscomefirst.org

Petfinder.com

To those out there who might want to look into local animals in need of homes I urge you to check out Petfinder.com. You can be as specific as you want, or vague. It can help you rescue locally, or out of the area. Have you been to this site before, if not check it out!

"Saving the life of one animal may not change the world, but the world will surely change for that one animal"-
............To be honest, the animals that I have helped have changed my world. To them I will be forever grateful.
